[INTERVIEW] B1A4 Mull over the misconception that they are 'Visual Idols'!
Who said that B1A4 is a visual group? B1A4 is a group made up of a people with a combination of abilities. Their fandom is more closely knit than you would expect it to be. The secret lies in ‘betraying expectations’. Let’s now investigate the charm of B1A4 who are just ahead of the 1st anniversary of their debut.
TO PRODUCE ‘IDOLS OUTSIDE OF ONE’S EXPECTATIONS’
B1A4 is a boys group made up of Jinyoung, Sandeul, CNU, Baro and Gongchan. They made their debut in Korea in 2011 and in March 2012, release their first full album THE B1A4 I [IGNITION]. Out of the 10 songs on the album, the members participated in writing the lyrics, composing and arranging 8 songs, with Jinyoung producing, composing and writing the lyrics for the title track ‘Baby I’m Sorry’.
For their second album, B1A4 had the image of refreshing youths. Hearing that some fans thought of B1A4 as ‘a group that only has looks’ after its release was a mortifying thought. Thus, they created their first full album with the goal of ‘showing their musical passion’.
‘Truth is, we participated in the making of our first and second mini album. We wrote lyrics for some of the songs, and wrote some songs as well. Even so, some people made a decision about us merely through what they saw. Although we had the zeal to participate in the making of the album right from the beginning, it is regretful that it was not obvious enough. As such, we mulled over it.’
Showing off B1A4’s special colours had been one of the main points of their first album. It was thus an album that showcased Baro and Sandeul’s solo songs, and brought across a more mature feel for B1A4. From listening to their title track, some people have thought that ‘B1A4 are now men’, but the concept B1A4 aimed to showcase was that of ‘youths to young men’. ‘Instead of becoming men (all of a sudden), we wanted to show the process of our maturation,’ said B1A4, ‘Although we have become young men, our freshness still remains,’ they continued, smiling.

That is what I heard from B1A4. I asked, what is the secret to having a fandom that acts together under the name of B1A4? ‘Our five members each have their distinct charm. Like a neighbourhood older brother, we want to be able to have that sort of closeness to our fans,’ said Jinyoung. When it comes to B1A4, the possibilities of the images that they can show of themselves are endless, and we can expect to see them betray our expectations. ‘We hope to expand the age group of our fans through this album,’ said B1A4.
Even though they are together 24/7, B1A4 said that ‘we have not quarreled once.’ It seems that even though they discuss a lot of things together, misunderstandings do not arise. Teamwork and talking to one another about things are very important. B1A4 said that ‘There are always a lot of interesting things to talk about. Because we live our everyday life like a comedy-drama, we will forget about how (quickly) time goes by.’ They confessed ‘We once spent nine hours talking to one another in a day.’
‘We often discuss our future stages and our goals. We enjoy ‘challenges’. Thus, we will always try to look for something new and special. Before we go up on stage, we will shout ‘let’s enjoy our stage’. We believe that if we enjoy the situation, we will be able to succeed in anything.’
Although they emphasised greatly on the ‘colour’ unique to B1A4 throughout the interview, when I asked about what it was, B1A4 answered that ‘it is made up of various things and cannot be defined clearly.’ It is, perhaps, the feeling of ‘Yes, this is B1A4’ that one gets when a certain song is heard, or when a certain stage is seen. Baro explained that ‘Although it cannot be defined with words, when you hear it and see it and you know that it’s B1A4, that’s what becomes our colours.’
‘We do not intend to record music that we do not participate in. [t/n: by participation, here they mean in terms of songwriting, lyric writing, composing etc.] Although our company will still help, we’d like to work harder from now on and try to create an album with the ideas from the five of us.’
