[INTERVIEW] Secret Misses School
Four-member Korean girl group Secret -- consisting of leader Hyosung, Zinger, Jieun and Sunhwa - made their debut with the single 'I Want You Back' in 2009.
The group was first introduced through the documentary Secret Story, which chronicled the members' debut process and featured their by-invitation-only showcase.
Secret is also well-known for successfully changing their sexy image, which they adopted in their earlier years in showbiz, to a cute-girl-next-door image through songs like 'Shy Boy' and 'Starlight Moonlight'.
Last December, the group represented the Hallyu wave and performed at a free concert in Paris, France. They also held a successful fan meet there.
In conjunction with the Golden Disk Awards 2011, xinmsn quizzed Secret on what they missed most after finding fame and the one highlight in their career thus far. Find out if the girls prefer their cute or sexy image and the kind of fans that they would remember.
Do you prefer being cute or sexy?
Zinger: I think our nature is cuter and a little bit cheerful.
Sunhwa: Looking back, our concept at the beginning ...
Zinger: It's powerful sexy.
Sunhwa: If we had a style, it'd be powerful sexy.
Zinger: Please choose an image which you think would suit us.
What is one highlight for you since your debut? What do you want to achieve next year?
Jieun: The best moment for us was when we were promoting 'Shy Boy'.
Sunhwa: That's right. We ranked No. 1 in a music programme for the first time. Our hard work paid off and it was a really special moment. It was a very productive year and we received lots of love too. Our aim is to evolve again this year and continue to be popular. Please support us.
Who takes the longest to get ready for a performance?
Sunhwa: All of us.
Zinger: I think we're all the same.
Jieun: I mean, girls put a lot of effort into preparations, so ... I think all of us take a while to get ourselves ready.
Sunhwa: Yes, it takes a while.
What do you do to calm nerves before a performance?
Sunhwa: We talk a lot when we're nervous. Rather than standing quietly, we talk and calm our nerves in a fun way.
You're popular idols now, but were there times when you missed being "ordinary people"?
Sunhwa: Yes. Essentially, all of us are university students. However, we're so busy, that we're missing school. Seeing the students around us makes us want to go to school.
Have you gotten used to being mobbed by fans?
Zinger: I wouldn't say we've gotten used to being mobbed. Rather, we've gotten a bit more used to being noticed by people.
Would you go out without any makeup on?
Sunhwa: I would. However, if you go out without any makeup on, it's bad for your skin, so make sure to use BB cream.
Jieun: I would too. We don't wear any makeup when we don't have to work. We're all right with it, but I wonder what people would think. I think Sunhwa has the prettiest makeup-free face. Her face looks the same before and after makeup. I'm so envious.
How do you maintain your figure?
Sunhwa: I eat a lot, but I exercise regularly too. It's easier to maintain the weight, if you increase your amount of exercise, after you've lost it.
Of all the places you've visited, which was the most memorable one?
Jieun: We went to Paris as Hallyu representatives recently. The scenery was really beautiful and we're also surprised that the fans could speak good Korean.
Sunhwa: That's right, it's amazing. Their pronunciations were excellent, and I still remember it.
What are the must-have items when you go overseas?
Sunhwa: In my case, it's cleanser and basic cosmetics. A simple face pack is a must-have item too, because the weather and the environment abroad often make my skin dry.
Are there any fans you remember in particular?
Jieun: People, who always come to the places we performed at, stick in our minds.
Sunhwa: Yes, if we see them several times, we remember their names and faces.
