Big Bang just kicked off their Big Bang Alive world Tour last weekend with three sold-out concerts in Seoul in front of more than 30,000 fans. As this is a Korea-focused technology and design blog we dispatched our secret K-pop loving staffer to the Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium in southern Seoul to check out the show.
Here's what she had to say:
Music: Big Bang is always a high energy band to watch. This year they brought in an elite group of instrumental musicians from overseas to liven up their back-up track, the first Korean band to do so at a solo concert. Having live musicians playing behind the band really set this concert apart from other K-pop concerts I've been to. While "Hands Up" is still my favorite Big Bang song EVER, I really loved their acoustic performance of "Haru Haru". Sigh!
Technology: I love Big Bang but I think even people who aren't fans of the band had a good time at this show. It was pure entertainment. The pyrotechnics were the biggest I've ever seen at a concert in Korea and must have required precision planning. The stage extended out into the audience bringing the band closer (YES!) to their fans. And, for people who like the band as much for how it looks as for how it sounds, there were giant Full HD screens on either side of the stage. I've never seen screens like that at a concert anywhere before, apart from the Beyoncé concert held at the same venue two years ago.
Design: Fan faves G Dragon and TOP came out, with TOP rocking his blue (!) hair, utilizing 4 different elevator platforms that went up from and down into the stage floor. Daesung even flew above the packed stadium audience's heads on wires with angel wings! So many costume changes, I couldn't even count and Taeyang at one point even ripped his shirt OFF! You could tell they invested a lot of time and effort into the creative design of the concert, employing giant beach balls with the members inside and rolled over the audience in during the encore – something I've only ever really seen at concerts back home in the US.
Overall: The entire experience was incredible, the fans singing along in the glow of their flower-shaped "BB" (for Big Bang!) fluorescent sticks, and the combined energy of the group and their band was really a sight to behold.
And great news for the ever-growing K-pop fan base around the world, as concert production company Live Nation will be promoting and producing the world tour, which will take Big Bang through Asia, North and South
America, and Europe, performing in 25 cities in 16 countries.
Here's hoping Big Bang makes it to YOUR city, as this was a feast for the eyes and ears you will not want to miss!

KPOP: Big Bang finally released their MV, "Fantastic Baby." Listen Now!
After much waiting and excitement from the fans, the K-POP group Big Bang has finally released the MV for their new single "Fantastic Baby", from their latest mini-album "Alive."
Very different from the first released songs "Blue" and "Bad Boy", the new single has a cheering and dancing vibe that, for sure, will make move their feet and dance even those who's not fan of the band or K-Pop itself. It's not out of nowhere that they are one of the K-Pop main artists.
Check out below their new MV, "Fantastic Baby" and don't forget to share it with your friends!

Judging by the growing alignment of American big media forces around K-pop—within the last two months, The Wonder Girls starred in a Teen Nick TV-movie, Interscope signees Girls Generation performed on Letterman and Swizz Beatz signed a broad production deal with a South Korean television company—2012 seems predestined to be the year the ever-growing genre breaks into the Western mainstream. Big Bang have been twice name-checked by Swizz as potential Chris Brown collaborators, and on “Bad Boy,” the newest music video from their Alive mini-album, they make the most compelling case yet for why a rising K-pop profile in America is a well-deserved and wonderful thing.
The song opens with a very Slick Rick-sounding, A-yo, Choice, drop it on me, spoken by the group’s leader, G-Dragon, an androgynous man with a delicate, Skrillex-inspired hairpiece and a patched motorcycle jacket with a teal muppet-fur back. Despite spending 6 years being trained for stardom by his record label before debuting with Big Bang, G-Dragon was found out by Seoul police last October for having smoking marijuana. Either way, he’s totally seamless here. “Bad Boy” is exquisite, with roots in the airiest of hip-hop/R&B summer crossover. Though it’s sung 90 percent in subtly processed Korean, carefully placed English phrases explain the song succinctly—Sorry, I’m a bad boy… you’re a good girl—and provide crucial hooks for at-home singalong. “Bad Boy” floats the way your hand does riding currents outside the car window, in and out of the sun without seemingly any effort.
But perhaps most importantly—and definitely most surprisingly—the music video for “Bad Boy” was filmed in Williamsburg, down by the Marcy Ave JMZ subway entrance. Half the charm of K-pop is that it’s preciously and unabashedly manufactured, but there’s something seriously compelling and refreshingly unforced about weaving dances around Brooklyn subway steps. In our interview last week, Swizz Beatz said, “It feels like Korea is in your backyard, the way the internet makes things.” It’s already past that point. Big Bang really is in our backyard. They’re on the ground and they’re walking the turf, and for four breezy minutes they’re absolutely killing it.

Most Memorable MVs of 2011!
Just three days into 2012, and we’ve already got a handful of teasers and releases from rookie groups and seasoned veterans alike. But before we move onto a brand new year of comebacks and debuts, let’s take a look at some of 2011′s most memorable music videos.
We picked ten of our favorites from the past year, from the obvious picks (ie.
Big Bang‘s award-winning “
Love Song”) to those we think deserve a second watch (ie. JOO‘s totally underrated MV for “Bad Guy”).
In no particular order, here are MTV K’s picks for Most Memorable MVs of 2011:
GD&TOP — “Knock Out”Released: January 3, 2011
Why We Loved It: As much as we love
Big Bang with the full roster of five, we’re so glad
GD&TOP happened. Kicking off 2011 with one of the freshest, most laid-back MVs of the year,
GD&TOP continued to show off the results of blending their unique tastes into an entirely new style. The Diplo-produced song itself was eventually banned from all three major broadcasting stations for its “harmful” use of slang, but it’s hard to imagine a performance that lives up to this visually-appetizing video. By no means are we endorsing the use of scantily-clad female back dancers (or pastel-colored eyebrows, for that matter), but there’s just so much greatness going on in this MV: The fashion, the bubble wrap, the butt chairs, and of course, a cameo by the one and only Gaho.
Big Bang — “Love Song” Released: April 13, 2011
Why We Loved It: After surpassing expectations with their fourth mini album early last year,
Big Bang soon followed up “
Tonight” promotions with “
Love Song,” but the group began winning awards on music shows before they even took their first step back on the stage. Sure, it’s a fantastic song, but we can’t help but think their epic MV played a small part in getting those wins. The cinematography and production, from the camera work and timing to the post-apocalyptical set and all its accompanying props, is nothing short of impressive, making it one of our favorite MVs of the year. “
Love Song” nabbed the 2011 MAMA for Best Music Video back in November — good to know we’re not the only ones who loved it.

Ready to flow, Ready to go
Ready for the spotlight,
Ready for the show
GD SAYS….FASHION & PASSION As with other hip-hop artists, I also want to have my own brand but compared to that, there’s something I want even more and that is to open my own store; a store that is the most recommended place to go in Korea for fashionistas around the world when they come here to play. I want people to feel that the store has cool staff, trendy clothes, good music and it’s somewhere that combines both the fashion trend and culture - a store where they can learn a lot from.I want to create a space and gather fashionistas there that will make up a special culture. Rather than luxury fashion, I am more compatible with street culture and quirky fashion brands. Designers for luxury brands also get their inspiration from street culture and do collaborations together. Affordable clothes are of course great, but I would rather recommend a street brand that has different aspects to offer - one that combines a certain culture or lifestyle.GD SAYS….KOREAN WAVEI think now is a perfect time for the Hallyu wave to jump out of Asia and break into different parts of the world. We shouldn’t waste this opportunity if we want our country’s music and the pop industry to intercept with each other. We have to work hard to expand our music. Japan is the 2nd biggest music market in the world but I think Korean music is also very outstanding too. I’m worried that we might just miss such a good opportunity. I hope we can fully grasp this chance and let the world understand our country’s music, and to educate the younger generation about it. There are a lot of outstanding musicians in Korea so I also have to work hard in the future. I don’t mean 5-6 years down the road but I want to work hard for a long time. I also want to lead new music and create a new Hallyu wave. I think now is a perfect time for not just Korean music to develop, but also a lot of different things. However, you can’t be lazy and not go to work just because it’s going smoothly; you have to work even harder to guide it into a new direction.I hope everyone works hard together and make sure that the Hallyu wave is developed and promoted further. I also expect myself to be standing in the center of all of this. Boy! I love your style
GD SAYS….BE A NEW STANDARD I hope people don’t simply listen to an artists’ new album and watch one of their performances, but they should set a standard for themselves and judge what is outstanding music.
There are a lot of music out there with almost the same standards and practically the same styles. I want to be the model answer to that; to be the standard that people can judge what is good music or not. However, if there are better and more outstanding musicians than me that can present a better answer, I will feel happy too. Run the world, Rule the nation
GD SAYS…MY DREAM
Seeing how handsome singers are on stage made me have the dream of becoming a singer. “Ah…I want to be like that, those kind of people are so handsome.” I really liked the singers at the time and even though the singers nowadays are also handsome and the songs are good, but I thought to myself how wonderful it would be to become like them.
Compared to other companies, YG can give me everything that I want. If I started music activities in another company then things would be different now. I’ve been in this company since I was young and learning has become part of my daily life.
Everything I learn here has a big effect on me. Going to the office is a natural thing for me nowadays. The days when I feel tired, I would rather stay in the office with my hyungs and make music together rather than going out to play. This is how this place is to me.
