TV host Kang Ho Dong, who quit due to controversy over his alleged tax evasion, has pledged to donate the entire profits from his shares in the restaurant franchise 678 to charity.
678 operates about 140 outlets across the country. Kang (42) has a 33.3 percent stake.
"Donating the shares themselves to charity is not readily possible because 678 is not listed on KOSDAQ," a 678 spokesman said. "Instead, Kang will donate the profits from his shares."
Given that 678 was valued at W30 billion (US$1=W1,138) in 2010, and the business has since expanded, the amount Kang can donate is estimated to run into the billions, the spokesman said. He added the chain's headquarters and outlets are planning to join Kang's charitable contributions. "Kang is currently discussing with company executives how and where to donate his money," he said.
A staff of Kang's agency said, "He has long thought about doing this. We're glad to be able to prepare for long-term donations."
Earlier, Kang also
donated a plot of land in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province worth W2 billion to Asan Medical Center in Seoul and started a project to build a school and other facilities for children in Sudan.
Meanwhile, Kang told reporters at the wedding of his former sidekick Woo Seung Min on Sunday that he has "not thought seriously about returning to TV yet."

Kang Ho Dong is making headlines again, although this time his name is cast in a better light than the days of his tax evasion scandal last year.
According to charity organization Child Fund Korea, the entertainer will sponsor a project that is geared toward providing an education-friendly environment for children in Africa.
“We are currently working on a project with Kang Ho Dong that will enable kids of an African village to receive education in a safe and welcoming environment,” a representative from Child Fund said.
“Although it’s a project geared toward encouraging schooling, a whole village will benefit from the project.
In addition to constructing a school, the organization will help pay for textbooks, train teachers and provide medical services for the students. Although the spokesperson omitted the exact sum that Kang will donate, she did say the school costs around 30 million won ($26,522) and that irrigation costs 10 million won.

It was revealed that the production team of KBS ’1 Night 2 Days’, together with the cast members Lee Soo Geun, Lee Seung Gi, Eun Ji Won, Kim Jong Min, and Uhm Tae Woong have reached out to Kang Ho Dong to show their appreciation.
The members had all tried calling him multiple times, but there was no answer on the other line. In the end, they decided that Lee Soo Geun should send Kang Ho Dong a thank you message for the whole group.
According to an associate of Lee Soo Geun the text message read, “We got the award thanks to you, hyungnim. We want to share this honor with you” and Kang Ho Dong replied, “Don’t get tired and don’t lose your spirit. I was happy to have been together with all of you”.
After winning the KBS Daesang Lee Soo Geun stated during his acceptance speech, “Big hyungnim, I will go visit you with the trophy” and he had publicly deferred all the glory to Kang Ho Dong.
Close friends revealed that the reason Kang Ho Dong hadn’t answered the call was because he felt that the honor should solely be with the ’1 Night 2 Day’s team. Kang Ho Dong watched the awards ceremony on TV, but it must have hurt a lot that he couldn’t be there.
Another associate stated, “To describe Kang Ho Dong’s situation right now, it’s more like that he has confined himself to his home. His heart hasn’t fully healed from the unfortunate incident and that is why he isn’t even able to answer the calls from the ’1 Night 2 Day’s casts, who are like his real brothers”.
’1 Night 2 Days’ was supposed to see its end on February of 2012, but for now, from all indication the production for its second season is being discussed. No official announcement has been made yet.
